The Opportunity:

The role of the Tax Team is to ensure that the University complies with its tax responsibilities both in the UK and overseas, and benefits fully from intended tax reliefs. In addition, we aim to make the handling of tax matters as seamless and straightforward for our staff as possible.

As a key member of the Tax Team, you will enable the University to meet its statutory reporting requirements, and support the whole University community in getting tax right, and allocating tax costs where they belong. Handling VAT correctly can be a daunting and stressful area for University staff to deal with. You can make a huge difference by providing clear guidance on queries around VAT and occasionally direct taxes, and supporting the efficient import and export of goods for use in the University’s many research programmes. You will gain insight into the wide variety of activities of a leading research university, plus an understanding of the tax issues that arise from these, and how to account for them.

Starting with a good understanding of how VAT works, you will benefit from the wide experience within the Tax Team, who will provide further insight on tax issues faced by the University, and by the HE sector as a whole. You will also gain a good understanding of the financial systems used to manage taxes. With your curiosity and attention to detail, you’ll be encouraged to look for improvements in the way we manage VAT, and in the way we convey information to staff about indirect tax.

Your skills and attributes for success:

Your most valuable attributes will include your knowledge of VAT, a logical mind with a high level of numeracy, and your ability to deliver sound advice, sometimes in the face of resistance. In addition:

  • A relevant vocational qualification and relevant work experience OR school education to Standard Grade/National 5 (or equivalent) plus relevant work experience.
  • Understanding of different VAT rates, VAT reliefs, and the principles of Partial Exemption
  • Understanding of financial reporting systems
  • A logical, focused and constructive approach
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Proficiency in working with Excel, particularly with formulas
  • Ability to organise and prioritise personal workload
