Sustainability Manager - Packaging & EPR
We have an exciting opportunity to join our Group Sustainability team in a Senior Management role as a Packaging & EPR Manager.
In this role you will be responsible for advising stakeholders across the NEXT Group of companies across Packaging and EPR topics. You will lead in ensuring legal compliance on all packaging sold in the UK, Eire and International Countries, as well as lead delivery and implementation of NEXT Packaging Strategy. We are looking for someone who wants to join a team that is fast-paced, evolving with a growing business.
You will need to have a wealth of experience within Extended Producer Responsibility and Packaging, have excellent Data Reporting skills and be able to demonstrate excellent Leadership skills. It is vital that you have the confidence to communicate, interpret and influence senior stakeholders. You will be responsible for ensuring all projects and workstreams are delivered on time and to budget. You are responsible for managing the budget for your area, and for compliance costs and forecasting.
This role currently has support from a team member based within the Lipsy Business, as well as data support from internal teams and external providers.
About the role:
To ensure Next operates as a responsible retailer you will oversee, manage and ensure compliance and reporting for UK, European and international legislation, including;
- Packaging , including labeling, EPR, all relevant taxes and levies
- UK HMRC Plastic Packaging Tax and international Plastic Packaging Tax; including developing business guidance and preparing the data reports for the submission
- Extended Producer Responsibility for WEEE, Batteries and Textiles
- UK Carrier Bag Regulations
- Single Use Plastics - advising product teams so they can ensure product ranges sourced meet the requirements
- Deposit Return Schemes
For all submissions, you will secure registrations, complete data submissions within given deadlines, working alongside our suppliers and the compliance scheme and lead on related external audits by the Environment Agency and third party auditors. You will provide technical support to internal teams and external suppliers as required; ensuring that data collection end to end processes are robust and auditable.
To lead negotiations related to EPR service agreements with external Compliance Schemes, manage associated costs and revenues including approval of Compliance Scheme levies and invoices as well as working to minimise the financial exposure of both the Plastic Packaging Tax and Extended Producer Responsibility for Packaging Waste regulations, working with internal teams to develop mitigation actions.
About you:
Essential Criteria
- Minimum of 3-5 years experience in working with external Packaging and EPR regulations, Compliance Schemes and their impact on organisations ideally within a Retailing environment
- Experience in a data collection / auditing role
- Experience in EPR audits and working with external authorities as well as a strong interest in ERP
- Excellent analytical skills - able to quickly identify root cause and solutions
- Numerically confident with a keen eye for detail
- Excellent communication skills - written and verbal
- Able to work alone but enjoying to work in a team in different projects
- Capability to see and realise potential improvements and identify cost savings
- Flexible and positive to change, have respect for deadlines and capable to work under time pressure
- Strong project management and implementation skills
- To be commercially aware with a good understanding of retail business processes
- Good level IT skills such as excel (VLOOKUPs, Pivot tables)
Desirable Criteria
- A relevant qualification at degree or equivalent level
- High level of self interest in sustainability is advantageous
- To demonstrate a resilient and dynamic approach
