Papua New Guinea 

 

Reporting directly to the Safety Superintendent – Underground; the incumbent will be responsible for providing technical advice and assistance for the implementation of Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems and Programs and ensures consistent compliance to NPL Operational Safety Standards and Requirements.

 

The ideal candidate should possess;

• Recognised tertiary qualifications in Environment or Occupational Health & Safety
• Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety or ability to acquire one soon 
• Certificate IV Assessment and Workplace Training (or equivalent in PNG)
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in safety advisory level in an extractive industry with proven ability to conduct safety audits, risk assessment, and incident investigations 
• Experienced in the development, implementation and management of safety management systems
• Proven experience with safety improvement plan development, implementation and measurement
• Competent in development of customised training and assessment resources from site, industry and statutory requirements
• High level understanding of all relevant legislation affecting the employment and safety of persons in the mining industry in PNG
• 3-5 years’ experience in underground mine operations highly regarded
• Willingness to work underground and surface areas.   Exposure to live electrical parts, chemicals, cold, heat, dust, lubricants, noise, weather, confined spaces, and heights
• First Aid Training and Certificate 
• Ability to communicate effectively across all levels both in English and Pidgin with strong report writing and presentation skills
• Good computer skills with the ability to use integrated safety management systems, safety databases, MS Office applications

 

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop, implement and review safety policies and procedures in line with the statutory regulations and company standards 
• Promote sections of the PNG Mining (Safety) Act, highlighting sections 274, 281 & 45
• Conduct regular safety inspections and audits to identify potential hazards and recommend corrective actions to rectify them 
• Investigate accidents and incidents according to Company policy and statutory requirements, prepare detailed reports and recommend preventive measures and corrective actions are completed 
• Provide safety training and guidance to all new employees, external consultants or contractors ensuring they are adequately inducted in their work area and are aware of all workplace rules and critical procedures applying at Porgera
• Analyze incident and hazard identification data regularly to assess trends and identify proactive measures to prevent reoccurrences 
• Monitor and analyse safety performance metrics, preparing reports for senior management 
• Manage a system for the regular audit of safety competency requirements against training records and a system for the management of non-compliances
• Maintain a high level of health, safety and environmental awareness and comply with the PJV Occupational Health, Safety and Environment Policy and Rules and Procedures.
