Chair/Reader of Metabolic Mental Health
The Opportunity:
The College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine are looking to appoint an outstanding academic (non-clinical and clinical applications welcome) as the Chair of Metabolic Mental Health to establish an internationally leading programme of research in metabolism and mental health, with a focus on severe mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression. This post will also support the activities of the new MRC Hub for Metabolic Psychiatry (https://www.metabolicpsychiatryhub.com/).
This role is full time (for clinical appointments 40 hours per week, for non-clinical appointments 35 hours per week) and open ended (permanent).
Candidates who do not meet the criteria for Chair will be considered for Reader. Criteria for both Chair and Reader are outlined on the job description.
Your skills and attributes for success:
- A track record of international standing in research at the interface of mental illness and metabolic disorders
- Experience in the design and delivery of clinical trials
- High level research and/or teaching experience successfully sustained, and productive over the long-term
- Reputation for excellence in engaging external stakeholders and the general public in research and knowledge exchange
- For clinical applicants: Medically qualified with an MD or PhD and expansive experience in academic research over a sustained period, and membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent (for clinical applicants)

For clinical appointments;
An Honorary NHS contract will be sought for the successful post holder. You therefore must be eligible to hold an honorary contract with NHS Lothian, and must also be registered with the General Medical Council.
*Placement on the payscale will be subject to consultant seniority as per the Clinical Consultant Contract. The successful applicant will be also be offered an additional Academic EPA. You must appear on the GMC Specialist Register and be eligible to hold an honorary consultant contract with NHS Lothian. If you are currently a member of the NHS Pension Scheme and are employed in a clinical post it may be possible for you to remain a member of the NHS Pension Scheme.
