CHILD SAFEGUARDING:  

Level 3:  the post holder will have contact with children and/or young people either frequently (e.g. once a week or more) or intensively (e.g. four days in one month or more or overnight) because they work country programs; or are visiting country programs; or because they are responsible for implementing the police checking/vetting process staff.

 

ROLE PURPOSE: 

The post holder is responsible for providing support and assistance to the Nutrition officer and TSFP officers in implementing the nutrition interventions (Community Management of Malnutrition [CMAM] and Infant and Young Child Feeding [IYCF]) while integrating with other sectoral interventions. The nutrition Assistant will also work with the Woreda health workers and Health extension workers in providing comprehensive nutrition services in the health facilities. Throughout the intervention, the Nutrition Assistant will work towards ensuring the quality delivery of nutrition interventions in the Project locations.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

Programme Support (typically will be at field level):

By Working closely with the Nutrition Coordinator, Nutrition and TSFP officer will do the following:

 

  • Ensure effective community mobilization and sensitization is conducted and Ensure monthly routine quality screening of U-5 and PLW at the community and HF level, ensuring appropriate referral of the cases of malnutrition are identified in the target communities
  •  Support and supervise the community health workers/volunteers for mobilisation activities and follow-up of the defaulter cases and conduct home visit with HEWs 
  • Carry out the day-to-day running of the OTP, SC, and TSFP sites, including admission, management and discharges, following the CMAM protocols and related documentation together with the health workers and HEWs. 
  • Ensure quality Health Education and IYCF-E counselling sessions provided during one to one and group Support meeting.
  • Provision of Outreach nutrition Services in target communities together with the HEWs 
  • With support from the Nutrition/TSFP Officer, ensure quality cooking food demonstration sessions, MSGs and hygiene promotion are integrated in Project supported Communities
  • Build the capacity of HEWs and Mother Leads by providing on-the-job training on CMAM and IYCF.
  • Support quality data collection of activities conducted in the HFs and Communities.
  • Promote increasing awareness of appropriate nutrition behaviour in project communities by ensuring behaviour change materials are visible in supported communities and health facilities.
  • Support the development of case studies and success stories from programme implementation.
  • Provide maternal and childcare/feeding key messages to beneficiaries of food program during food distribution.
  • Ensure quality and timely reporting on all areas of implementation and Liaise closely with the HMIS/MEAL team so as to understand the project outcomes

QUALIFICATIONS   

  • BSC Degree in Nursing, Nutrition, or Health Education and behavioural since with two year minimum work experience working in nutrition programmes within government or NGO setup
  • Ability to cope and work under pressure in the field site
  • High flexibility and ability to work without close supervision
  • Ability to work for long hours especially in hard-to-reach locations within facility catchment areas
  • Experience working with the local communities
  • Understanding of community management of acute malnutrition
  • Computer skills knowledge and applications especially Ms Word and Excel
  • Excellent communication skills and a willingness to be respectful, kind, sensitive and empathise with children and their careers
  • Willingness and capacity to be flexible and accommodating when faced with difficult and frustrating working conditions
  • Strong report writing and computer skills
  • Commitment to and understanding of Save the Children’s aims, values and principles.
  • Understanding of local language( Tigrigna) and culture is mandatory.
  • Understanding of English language (Listening, speaking, reading, writing
